Cromarty House
The house was built in 1790 according to the original title deeds now in the possession of the current owners. This building is listed as Grade II under the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990 as amended for its special architectural Georgian style and historic interest.
The objectives of the proposed work are to refurbish the ground floor space, both internally and externally, to improve the habitability, functionality and appearance of the family property. The proposal involves the demolition of some existing internal walls to improve circulation and usability of the space within the ground floor. The proposal also involves the removal of the existing kitchen, and the creation of a new kitchen and dining space in a new rear extension, in order to increase the area and its usability, and improve the level of natural daylight in the space.
The interior alteration and extension to the ground floor of Cromarty House proposed here represents a careful, sensitive approach to modernising this outstanding Grade II listed property. The rear extension is situated away from the public realm, and uses the existing patio footprint to minimise impact on neighbouring dwellings and the Conservation Area more broadly. The design of the extension takes its lead from the history of the house, while delivering a contemporary aesthetic and modern, light, efficient and highly usable space.
